Is someone you love struggling? We listen. We understand. We are here for you.

AMHS-KFLA’s Family Resource Centre (FRC) provides a range of resources and supports to help caregivers and loved ones of individuals with severe mental illness and/or addictions issues take care of themselves as they do with their loved ones. The FRC offers support services through individualized, couples counselling (any two individuals) or support groups. We work with a caregiver to identify their personal needs to help them balance their caregiving responsibilities with their own independence. The FRC uses several therapeutic techniques including assessments, goal oriented skills development, and supportive counselling to help caregivers regain a sense of control and independence.  The FRC is fully funded by the United Way KFL&A, all services are free and accessible.

The FRC can provide counselling, system navigation and support groups to those who are supporting someone else with addiction and/or mental health concerns. The FRC aims to direct caregivers to the services that are most beneficial to meeting their individual needs through AMHS or another KFL&A-based support service.

There is a support group available in person, every other Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Our support group offers caregivers the opportunity to connect with others who are also supporting a loved one with mental health and/or addictions disorders. Our support group offer caregivers a safe and welcoming environment where they can freely express themselves and have peer support while they support their loved one on their journey.

The Family Resource Centre is located in the AMHS-KFLA office at 552 Princess Street in Kingston – services are available by appointment.  Staffed by our Family Support Worker, the FRC also features a library of educational materials available to borrow. All services are confidential and free.

“I learned that every year, one in five people need help with mental health concerns and that substance use and gambling problems are much more common than I thought.  The people at the Family Resource Centre gave me the support and the information I needed to understand my son’s illness and what it was doing to our family.” – Carol
